Ohio Organizations Invited to Apply for $51 Million In Funds

The OneOhio Recovery Foundation today launched its first grantmaking process with the release of its 2024 Regional Grant Cycle Request for Proposals (RFP). OneOhio Mission Moment

As they reflect on their service and mission, the OneOhio Recovery Foundation’s Board of Directors take a moment at the beginning of each meeting to recognize Ohioans impacted by the opioid epidemic.

In December, former board member Deborah Matz (Region 5) honored Shelly Bornstein and her family, who lost their son and brother, Tyler, to an accidental overdose in 2014. Since Tyler’s death, the Bornsteins have operated Hope United, a nonprofit organization based in Summit County that provides peer recovery support and other services to more than 800 people each month. We thank Shelly for sharing her family’s story with us. She has turned the unimaginable loss of her son into action that is now providing hope to so many in Summit, Stark and Portage counties. Read their story here.

In February, Dawn Tyler Lee (Region 1) shared the story of a remarkable woman who has overcome great adversity and is now in long-term recovery. Addicted to drugs and alcohol as a teenager, Shay Brown faced ongoing challenges into early adulthood, even losing custody of her children.  After entering a strong, court-ordered treatment program and joining a 12-step recovery program, she is now looking forward to earning a college degree. We thank Shay for sharing her story with us. Read her story here.

OneOhio Around the State

OneOhio Executive Director Alisha Nelson and Director of Partnership and Outreach Sarah Anstine have been busy traveling the state to meet with the 19 OneOhio Regions and other organizations committed to building healthier Ohio communities.

In early February, Director Nelson was in Montgomery County for the Region 8 meeting.

Last week, Director Nelson met with the Mental Health & Addiction Advocacy Coalition’s Board of Directors. She also presented at Stepping Up Ohio’s Steering Committee meeting and at the Public Children Services Association of Ohio’s Annual Conference.

Board Member Updates

At the February meeting, Larry Kidd announced he was stepping down as board chair, but would continue to serve as a Governor-appointed member of the board.

“It has been my distinct honor to serve as chair of the Foundation board over the past 14 months. I’m proud of the work completed during this time, including hiring our first full-time executive director and helping to get this organization ready to begin the heart of its mission in distributing funds to help save lives,” Kidd said. “Now, continuing as a member of this board, I’ll look forward to the future contributions my colleagues and I can make to the Foundation’s important work.”

Board Vice Chair Don Mason now serves as interim chair until the election of officers at the annual meeting in May 2024.

The Foundation also welcomed Greta Johnson, Ron Luce and Ted St John as the newest members of the Board of Directors. Johnson was recently appointed by Region 5 to replace Deborah Matz, Luce was recently appointed by Region 10 to fill a vacancy, and St John was recently appointed by Region 13 to replace Kathryn Whittington.
