Dr. Zili Sloboda, ScD.

Internationally recognized for her work in substance use epidemiology research, services research, and the evaluation of treatment and prevention programs, Sloboda currently focuses on workforce development in the area of prevention and the relationship between training and the implementation of evidence-based prevention interventions and policies. Following her training in medical sociology at New York University and in mental health and epidemiology at Johns Hopkins, Sloboda has served on the faculties of the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, the University of Illinois School of Public Health, and the University of Akron. Most recently, Sloboda spent 12 years at the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) in several capacities, including the Director of the Division of Epidemiology and Prevention Research. While at NIDA, Sloboda and her staff organized the International Epidemiology Work Group and the International HIV Prevention Network. She was also a founder of the U.S. and E.U. Societies for Prevention Research and is well-published in the area of drug abuse epidemiology and substance use prevention. Sloboda has a long-standing commitment to the dissemination of evidence-based programming and advancement of Translation I and II research through work with the Society for Prevention Research, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the International Narcotics Control Board, and more.
Sloboda believes the OneOhio Recovery Foundation can make Ohio the leader in the nation for developing comprehensive and integrated substance use service delivery systems focused on evidence-based practice. She added, “Our services are not reaching those in need. We have to do a better job.”
